Kevin Doyle

PARLIAMENT OR DEMOCRACY?*

The author shows, with detailed research and examples from recent history, how parliaments evolved from bring councils of advisors to the rich and powerful to representing and running society exclusively in their interests. A century of ?parliamentary socialism? has failed as the rich get richer at the expense of the poor. Examines the anarchist alternative.

Captain Jack White

THE MEANING OF ANARCHISM

Although virtually written out of Irish history, the founder of the Irish Citizen Army did not vanish after the 1913 lockout. In 1936 he was fighting with the Spanish CNT against Franco?s army. This pamphlet was a direct result of his experiences.

Alexander Skirda

FACING THE ENEMY: A HISTORY OF ANARCHIST ORGANIATION

Drawing on decades of research, Skirda is able to trace the history of Anarchism as a political movement and ideology across the 19th and 20th centuries. He offers biting and incisive portraits of the major thinkers and organisers and of their opposition?like the Paris chief of police who organized undercover ?anarchist bombers? in an attempt to infiltrate and discredit the movement.

Skirda argues that the core problem for anarchists has been to create a revolutionary movement and envision a future society in which the autonomy of the individual is not compromised by the need to take collective action. How anarchists have grappled with that question in theory and in practice make up the core of the book.

NO WAR BUT THE CLASS WAR! LIBERTARIAN ANTI-MILITARISM THEN AND NOW

This pamphlet presents 110 years of anti-militarist propaganda, from Spain?s last imperialist adventure in 1893, through the First World War right up to the ?War on Terror?. It includes Randolph Bourne?s classic analysis of why war is the ?health of the state?. Libertarians have opposed the armed forces as the ultimate prop of the state, a pool of scab labour and the place where the authority principle (orders, not logic) runs rampant. Anarchists have always argued that the alternative to dying for our leaders is fighting for a new world. There?s a brief glimpse of how this looks in practice, from the Ukraine?s Makhnovist insurgents to Spain?s revolutionary militias.

3.20

FIGHTING FOR WOMEN?S FREEDOM*

Short pamphlet dealing with why women get a raw deal and what we can do about it.

0.35

Nestor Makhno

THE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE STATE

Makhno was a committed anarchist who had spent years in the Tsar?s jails. Released by the February Revolution he returned home to Gulyai-Polye and threw himself into organising trade unions, collectives and soviets. During the civil war he was the leader of a workers and peasants army in the Ukraine, which saved the Red Army from military defeat at the hands of the Whites. When the White threat had been dealt with the Bolsheviks turned on the anarchists and eventually defeated them.

From his Paris exile in the 1920s Makhno wrote these articles dealing with the Russian Revolution, the insurgency in the Ukraine, the national question, anti-Semitism, the Kronstadt revolt, the Bolshevik dictatorship, ?soviet? power, and anarchism.

ANTI-IMPERIALISM AND NATIONAL LIBERATION*

MANUFACTURING CONSENT

The book of the film. Beautifully and lovingly produced. 300 stills from the film, a complete transcript, excerpts from Chomsky?s writings, interviews and correspondence, further exchanges between Chomsky and his critics, historical and biographical material, and film maker?s notes and resource guide.

The media present themselves as objective, balanced and free from any agenda. Reality suggests something different. The media are large companies that serve to mobilise support for the special interests that dominate state and corporate power. In democratic societies populations are not controlled by force. Rather, they are subject to more refined forms of manipulation. Necessary illusions are created. Consent is manufactured. The public is marginalised.

24.00

Milan Rai

CHOMSKY?S POLITICS

For over twenty five years Noam Chomsky ?s political writings have enlightened and inspired radicals whilst enraging their opponents in the halls of power. Beginning with a concise biography of the man, Milan Rai paints a sympathetic yet probing analysis of Chomsky?s critique of the United States media and foreign policy, and of his vision of a libertarian socialist future.

17.75

James Connolly

LABOUR IN IRISH HISTORY

In this little book Connolly challenges the nationalist myths about the Irish struggle for freedom from British rule. Connolly?s aim was to convince the radical nationalists that their policy of a ?union of classes? would lead to disaster. He argued that Irish independence would bring little in the way of freedom and progress for the majority of the Irish people unless it included a fundamental challenge to the structure of society. He also shows graphically how the Irish capitalist class was always prepared to abandon and betray the struggle for liberation if its economic and social interests were threatened.

2.00

LOCKOUT

Why the Orange Order is an enemy of all workers, Protestant as well as Catholic. From it?s origins in the landlord organised reaction to the 1798 rebellion to the little known struggle when the Falls and the Shankill fought together. And a fresh look at the King Billy story.

1.00

Andrew Flood

THE 1798 REBELLION*

In June of 1795 several Irish Protestants gathered on top of Cave Hill, overlooking Belfast. They swore ?never to desist in our efforts until we had subverted the authority of England over our country and asserted our independence?. Three years later 100,000 rose against Britain in the first Irish republican insurrection. The author examines what they were fighting for and how they influenced modern Irish nationalism.

0.60

WINNING THE WATER WAR*

How the water charges were defeated. How the movement grew from tiny meetings to a mass campaign of non-payment which forced the government to abolish this double tax.

Portuguese anarchism has been overshadowed by the events in neighbouring Spain. But, for all that, Portugal has a long tradition of libertarian organisation. AGAINST ALL TYRANNY! ESSAYS ON ANARCHISM IN BRAZIL

Emigration was one of the great dreams of nineteenth century European workers, and Brazil was just one of the ?New Worlds? which took them, and showed them that the promise of such promised lands was easily broken. But the anarchist dream of freedom and revolution came with them, and workers ? Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Brazilian ? fought to make it a reality. And it was not only rampant capitalism they had to fight, but also state-worshippers, both Left and Right. This pamphlet contains an outline of the history of the anarchist movement in Brazil to the present day and records some of the figures who made it what it was.

OPEN BORDERS:

THE CASE AGAINST IMMIGRATION CONTROLS

Hayter assesses the impact of border controls since they were first introduced and makes the controversial case for their abolition. She answers the arguments about migration threatening jobs, working conditions and welfare benefits. This book shows that immigration restrictions have less to do with controlling numbers and more to do with legitimising racism.
